Angela’s Ashes by Frank McCourt

What’s it about? Born in Depression-era Brooklyn to Irish immigrant parents, Frank McCourt was later raised in the slums of Limerick, Ireland. His mother, Angela, had no money to feed her children since Frank’s father, Malachy, rarely worked, and when he did, he drank his wages. Angela’s Ashes is the story of how Frank endured – wearing shoes repaired with tires, begging for a pig’s head for Christmas dinner, and searching the pubs for his father.

Is the narrator any good? McCourt is not only a great storyteller, but he’s a FANTASTIC reader. I was captivated by his Irish brogue, occasional songs and joyful spirit. He narrates with a different voice for every character and the conversations flow so realistically you’d think you were standing right there in the pub in Limerick yourself!

The verdict? Listening to Angela’s Ashes is an example of how an audio book can bring a dimension to literature that raises the medium far above the convenience of “listening on the go”. The book is a classic, having won the Pulitzer Prize in 1997 and a National Book Critics Circle Award in 1996. But to listen to McCourt tell his story with eloquence, exuberance and remarkable forgiveness is something else – I feel as if people who have only read the book have missed out on something. Finally, some people find Angela’s Ashes to be depressing, but I find it to be just the opposite. McCourt’s attitude is inspiring. He got through his terrible childhood, and triumphed. And the world is a better place for it.

Free Audiobook Downloads

free audio book downloadsAudio books can be expensive to buy. Fortunately, there are some great sites where you can download and listen to audio books for free. Below are 10 of my favorite sites to find free audio book downloads:

Books Should Be Free – provides a visually appealing way to browse audio books published by Librivox. You can see the book cover, view audio books by genre and browse the top 100 audio books available for download.

Learn Out Loud -  offers more than 2,000 free audio and video titles. In addition to audio books, Learn Out Loud has lectures, speeches, sermons and interviews available for download. The site is very user friendly, allowing you to both filter results and sort by most popular, member rating, etc.

LibriVox – has a huge selection of audio books available for download. However, the site is not particularly user-friendly which is why I like Book Should Be Free and Librophile.

Librophile – provides a clean, simple interface for browsing audio books available from LibriVox.

New Fiction – offers a library of audio books that are performed by multiple actors, which they liken to modern-day radio dramas.

PodioBooks – offers serialized audio books distributed via RSS, much like a podcast. There are over 300 audio books available which are spread through a wide variety of genres including chick lit, fantasy, humor, magical realism and thrillers.

Project Gutenberg – has a decent selection of both human-read and computer-generated audio books (I suggest you don’t waste your time with the latter).

Spoken Alexandria Project – free audio book library with public domain classics and modern works.

Storynory – a free audio book site especially for kids. A new audio story is published every week.

Your Local Library – NetLibrary and OverDrive provide the infrastructure for libraries to distribute digital content (ie not just audio books, but also eBooks, music, and video). The best way to look further into this is to visit the website of your local library.

Bonus – while Audible and eMusic are not free audio book sites, they both offer a free audio book (including the latest bestsellers) as part of a no-obligation trial.

The Girl Who Played With Fire by Stieg Larsson

the girl who played with fire audiobookWhat’s it about? In The Girl Who Played With Fire, the second novel in Stieg Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy, Lisbeth Salander is a wanted woman. Mikael Blomkvist and the police are conducting parallel investigations into three horrifying murders – and their initial evidence points straight at Salander whose fingerprints are on the murder weapon. While Blomkvist – alone in his belief in her innocence (well, at least for two of the murders) – investigates the slayings, Lisbeth is drawn into a hunt in which she is the prey, and which compels her to revisit her dark past in an effort to settle with it once and for all.

Is the narrator any good? If you read my review of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, you will be aware that I’m a big fan of Saul Reichlin. In this audio book he once again enriches a narrative already alive with interesting characters. Plus he easily handles the many Swedish names and places that could make it difficult to read, rather than listen, to the book.

The verdict? I enjoyed The Girl Who Played With Fire as much, if not more, than its predecessor. It’s an intelligent page turner that will keep you guessing until the final page. And the ending will have you running to get the third book ASAP.

Overall

The Audible iPhone does not disappoint – it provides a better listening experience and a whole range of useful features. Nice one Audible.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson

WThe girl with the dragon tattoo audiobookhat’s it about? The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (originally titled “Men Who Hate Women”) is an award winning mystery by the late Swedish author and journalist Stieg Larsson. The book is titled after the character Lisabeth Salander, a societal outcast and social ward of the State, uncivilized without any desire to obey societal norms, and replete with piercings, tattoos, and a goth/biker appearance. Lisabeth teams up with Mikael Blomkvist, a once-respected financial journalist who has watched his professional life rapidly crumble around him, to investigate a 40-year old mystery – the disappearance of Harriet Vanger from a family gathering. When the pair link Harriet’s disappearance to a number of grotesque murders from forty years ago, they begin to unravel a dark and appalling family history. However, not everyone is happy that Blomkvist and Salander are digging around in the past.

Is the narrator any good? Saul Reichlin brings this book to life in a wonderful way. It is easy to distinguish between characters, despite a variety of accents (Swedish, Irish, Australian, Russian, etc.) and Reichlin does this without making them into caricatures. Overall, it was a pleasure listening to Reichlin read this book.

The verdict? You’ve probably heard all the rave reviews surrounding this book (and the others in The Trilogy); believe them! This is a thrilling and addictive mystery with characters who are both greatly enduring and refreshingly different. Warning: this book does start very slowly, but if you push through this you will be rewarded.
